What Educators Are Saying
Betsy has a way of choosing the right experiences for the group and facilitating reflective discussions, practice in new strategies, and planning needed change. The Virtues Project language and strategies are very powerful in and of themselves, but Betsy's workshops are the needed bridge to bring them to life in ways that make sense for our students and our environment. I recommend Betsy Lydle Smith without reservation as a truly excellent Master Facilitator of the Virtues Project.

School Principal and Teachers Talk about the Benefits of Virtues Training
Several years ago, the administration of the small Montessori school I worked for was looking for "something" to reinforce the spirit of peace it was trying to instill in it's young students. Two of my dearest friends (and coworkers) and I learned about The Virtues Project™ and took the Introductory course. Inspired by the "program", we returned to our school and immediately integrated the language of virtues into our school culture. We were uncertain the 3- to 12- year olds we worked with would understand, but we knew the impact it had on us and were determined it would do the same for our community of learners.
What happened in the first year was astonishing. Discipline issues were reduced to zero! It was not that problems ceased to exist, rather the approach to managing the problems had changed. Children as young as three began mindfully articulating their needs and their peers began demonstrating an aptitude for consideration, understanding, and peacefulness.
The effect of The Virtues Project™ was evident and the following year was more of the same. By then, parents of the children had begun commenting that their children were using the language of virtues in their homes and around other groups of family and friends. Motivated by the effect it was having on our small community, we took the facilitator training and began training others to use the language of virtues. Seven years later, I continue my journey teaching the children I work with this life-changing approach to peace with the same results time and time again.

This was the most useful in-service I have attended in my 15 years of teaching.

Discipline referrals at Woodridge decreased by 25% this year. When students were referred to the office, Virtues language and reflection practices were used to help students learn from the experience and make changes for the future.
